Illinois Alliance for Welcoming Health Care

DHS Public Charge

Over the last two years, immigrants have faced threats of deportation and family separation, forcing parents to choose between accessing life-saving care and services for their families and keeping their families together. These policy’s have caused significant damage to community well-being. The  increase of fear has led to the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) to create the Illinois Alliance for Welcoming Health Care.

  • Children who have had a parent detained or deported experience an increased occurrence of social isolation, depression, and anxiety. Illinois is home to 249,000 children who have at least one undocumented parent, representing 8% of our total child population (2,969,000).
  • Those who worry about being deported or having a relative or friend be deported have a higher likelihood of reporting the need to seek mental or emotional help.

The Illinois Alliance for Welcoming Health Care is dedicated to ensuring that immigrants receive equitable access and quality services. They hope to create a environment for everyone in every healthcare institution in Illinois.

Legal Council is an avid supporter of the Alliance. At Legal Council, we believe everyone deserves a fair chance to lead a life of dignity and opportunity. That’s why we will stand with our partners at ICIRR and the Alliance to fight policies that threaten dignity, opportunity, and well-being, and ensure families can access the care they need, together.
