STATEMENT: The House Just Voted to Slash Medicaid—Here’s How We Stop Them

Just after dawn, Republicans in Congress voted to give massive tax breaks to billionaires by terminating health insurance and eliminating SNAP benefits for millions of Americans. Their bill includes the largest cuts to Medicaid in history AND cuts more than $500 billion from Medicare AND makes Marketplace insurance more expensive. Overall the bill, including further cuts secreted in during the night, will mean millions of people have their health coverage terminated or become unaffordable.

This bill took a very bad turn, but this fight isn’t over—it now goes to the Senate for a vote and we can demand changes be made there.

Here’s what you can do now to fight for Medicaid:

  • Talk to your family and friends in states with Republican Senators and help them make a plan to get loud about how extreme the House bill is and how critical Senate changes are.
  • Take a few minutes to call the IL Congresspeople who voted yes on this big, bad bill. Tell them Illinoisans aren’t backing down!
  • Get educated on the bill’s content—here’s a good place to start.
  • Watch this space for future opportunities for calls, public demonstrations, social media pushes, and other actions.

The stakes couldn’t be higher—millions of lives and livelihoods are on the line, and it’s up to all of us to fight back before this dangerous bill becomes law.
