Resisting Chaos and Protecting Vital Programs
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) freeze on federal spending memo has been rescinded, after causing much confusion and fear. The White House is counting on this chaos to distract us, overwhelm us, and tire us out while it pushes its extreme ideological agenda.
But please don’t lose sight of this: federal funding helps people.
Federal funding for SNAP makes sure we can all have food on our tables. Federal funding for Social Security provides income to people who are unable to work and who would otherwise have little or no income. Federal funding for scientific research and medicine fuels critical discoveries so we can live longer and healthier lives. Federal funding for Medicaid, housing, and other public benefits saves lives.
These are good programs that help us all. But these under-resourced programs have been undermined for decades. Republican leaders are now planning ahistoric cuts to these budgets to pay for tax cuts for corporations and billionaires.
While the exigency caused by yesterday’s OMB freeze memo may have passed, we know federal funding threats are coming. We ask you to stand with us, speak up, and stay in the fight. Together, we will work through this confusion and fear to protect the critical resources that sustain our communities, and keep pushing forward.
