Why did you want to intern with Legal Council?
I am specifically interested in Legal Council because of my background. Prior to attending law school, I intended to pursue a premedical degree since both of my parents are active physicians. Nonetheless, I obtained a business degree and pursued a legal education. Upon finishing law school, I welcomed the opportunity to combine my interest in health and legal studies. I am particularly drawn to Legal Council as the organization helps pediatric, low-income patients obtain a variety of services that are tailored to meet both their current and future needs, collaborates with hospitals and human services, and educates and advocates for health rights and change.

I would like to acquire new tools that will help me become an effective advocate for members of our society who do not have the voice or the resources to fight for their rights.

What is your favorite summertime activity to do in Chicago?
Getting together with friends, whether it be a happy hour or one of the many museums.
What is your favorite Beyoncé album?
That’s like asking my favorite child or something! But probably BEYONCÉ or Lemonade. Every album is timeless but the visual items are IT! Plus the surprise releases? I could write essays.

Why did you want to intern with Legal Council?
I worked in a school last year and saw a lot of the legal problems my students went through. At the time, I wasn’t really able to do much to help, but when I saw this internship, I thought, “This is my chance!”

Why did you want to intern with Legal Council?
In college, I had been a part of a student organization that reached out to the homeless population in Charlottesville. Those volunteer experiences completely changed the way that I thought of some of the most marginalized populations in America, and I also realized that those on the streets had so many lived experiences I could not even fathom. At the same time, these people had urgent needs, and I felt like I had no resources to offer. When I found out about Legal Council’s homeless program, I was really excited because I felt like giving direct services to clients who were homeless could be a way for me to see how lawyers try to help in a tangible way. I also wanted to challenge my mind and apply the legal skills that I have been learning at law school the past year.
What do you hope to learn this summer?
I want to master how an entire social security case functions from start to finish. I also want to witness the experiences of clients who have to endure this arduous process so that I can empathize with them better. I hope I can also see how non-profit organizations operate.
What is your favorite summertime activity to do in Chicago?
I just moved to Chicago, but I have really enjoyed having the free time to watch movies, go on long walks by the lake, and hopefully get to see more outdoor concerts by Millennium Park.
