Shelmun Dashan, Staff Attorney
Shelmun (pronounced shell-moon) joined Legal Council in February 2019 as a staff attorney in the HIV/AIDS program. Prior to joining Legal Council, she was a staff attorney for five years at LAF (formerly Legal Assistance Foundation), the largest provider of civil legal aid to low-income residents of Cook County. Shelmun started her legal career at LAF as a Harvard Public Service Venture Fund fellow focusing on predatory lending litigation and debt defense. At LAF, Shelmun worked in the Consumer Protection Practice Group (debtor defense litigation) and the Housing Practice Group (eviction defense litigation). She was also a staff attorney in both the Home Care and Long Term Care Ombudsman Projects, litigating and advocating for seniors and people with disabilities who live in nursing homes or receive home care services. Shelmun graduated from Harvard Law School and earned a B.A. in Psychology from Covenant College, magna cum laude.
