Johan Lee, AmeriCorps VISTA

Born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI, Johan works to expand the capacity of child health programming and policy work at Legal Council. Johan graduated with honors from Calvin College in 2018 with a B.S. in Biochemistry and a concentration in Pre-medical Studies. He also majored in Philosophy, which, through studies of phenomenology, virtue theory, and the philosophy of law, instilled in him a passion for social justice through medicine. As an undergraduate student, he conducted stem-cell Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research at the University of Michigan, spent an academic term observing developing medical systems in Nepal, and studied Traditional Chinese Medicine in Shanghai. Additionally, he spent three years as a volunteer scribe at Exalta Health, an organization focused on bringing quality and affordable healthcare to the urban underserved in his hometown. He hopes to become a surgeon, through and after which he plans on striving for health justice both in the United States and abroad.
