Chad Ayers, Staff Attorney
Chad joined Legal Council in January 2020 as a staff attorney in the HIV/AIDS program. Prior to joining Legal Council, he worked for two years at the Virginia Division of Legislative Services, which provides nonpartisan legal services to the Virginia General Assembly, as the lead staff attorney for the Criminal Subcommittee of the House Committee for Courts of Justice and as a staff attorney for the House Committee on General Laws. While there, he drafted legislation and provided legal and general research services to members of the General Assembly and its standing committees in the House of Delegates and Senate of Virginia on a broad range of legal issues including criminal, housing, and civil rights law. Chad began his legal career by working for five years as a criminal defense attorney with public defender offices in Richmond and Charlottesville, Virginia. During that time, he represented countless low-income clients charged with a wide range of misdemeanor and felony offenses and worked with numerous community organizations to connect clients with additional legal and social support services as part of a holistic approach to representation. Chad graduated from Washington and Lee University School of Law and earned a B.A. in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia.
